The Beginnings of
Float Therapy

The Science of R.E.S.T (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) also known as Sensory Deprivation has been around for over 60 years. It is a technique whereby sensory input is minimalised to encourage a deep level of relaxation. Experiencing this sensory deprivation within an environment of warm, dense, gravity free liquid, is known as ‘Floating’.  Dr John Lilly discovered the benefits of floating in the early 1950’s.

The first Float Tank Centre was opened in California USA in 1973, where they grew in popularity throughout the 1980’s until there was a lull in public interest throughout the 1990’s.

After continued research, improved filtration techniques and closely monitored standards, interest was reborn in the 2000’s.

Today their hygiene management is pristine.

Events, conferences and annual float summits, dedicated to promoting and celebrating Floatation therapy are again organised throughout the world, and once again the Float community has grown.

A study that was presented at a 2012 floatation summit in Sweden showed compelling evidence that floatation therapy, also referred to as REST can have a “beneficial impact” on those who suffer from fibromyalgia. Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis and general relief from pain are also some of the many positive outcomes from REST. Researchers discovered that there were ‘significant temporary reductions in muscle tension, stress, anxiety, and sadness, as well as significant increases in relaxation, feelings of well being, energy and ease of movement. There was also noted  improvement in the quality of sleep.’

Here in Australia we are keeping up with the International following of Floatation Therapy and are passing the benefits to you.
